GISB probe: Health Ministry assessing mental health of children rescued from charity homes

PUTRAJAYA: The Health Ministry is currently evaluating the mental health of children rescued from charity homes operated by GISB Holdings Sdn Bhd (GISBH), following concerns over potential trauma.

Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad said that these children are suspected of facing mental health challenges, likely stemming from their traumatic experiences.

"Several aspects are still under investigation. The Health Ministry will provide counseling support, and I believe the National Centre of Excellence for Mental Health (NCEMH) will be involved at the clinic level," Dr Dzulkefly said during a media briefing after the 2024 Elderly Day celebration at the ministry on Tuesday (Oct 1).

He added that while counselling services have already been extended to the affected children, updated statistics on their mental health are still pending.

Dr Dzulkefly also clarified that NCEMH would focus primarily on delivering counselling services, while the ministry will address health and medical-related concerns. The ministry will provide specialised support services as required, based on the children’s individual needs.

On Sept 11, police raided 20 charity homes managed by GISBH in Selangor and Negri Sembilan, rescuing 402 children amid allegations of child neglect, sexual abuse and molestation.
