Enough food in flood-hit areas for now

KUALA TERENGGANU: The food supply in flood-affected areas is adequate, says Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Minister Datuk Armizan Mohd Ali (pic).

He said major wholesalers and selected retailers in each district have been allowed to increase the controlled goods supply storage limit by 30% of the existing limit throughout the disaster period.

“At the ministry level, our main responsibility is to ensure that the necessary supplies are sufficient when there is a flood. The SOP (standard operating procedure) is already there.

“When there is a flood, we activate this approach to ensure that the people are not cut off,” he said after launching the Terengganu Madani Mega Rahmah Sale 2024 programme here yesterday, Bernama reported.

Armizan said all the ministry’s units at the state and branch-levels must be aware of the current weather and cooperate with flood management committees.

He added that in addition to making preparations in advance given the unpredictable weather, the ministry was also working closely with MetMalaysia to disseminate information on possible flooding.

Four states have been hit by floods, namely Kedah, Penang, Perlis and Selangor, with Kedah recording the highest number of victims with 6,087 taking shelter in 36 temporary evacuation centres in seven districts.
