‘Complex for other religions a symbol of Sarawak’s unity’

KUCHING: The Unit for Other Religions (Unifor) Complex will be a symbol of Sarawak’s unity and inclusivity once it is ready, says Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah.

He said the RM73mil building, which is nearing completion, would serve as the headquarters for Unifor and its charitable trust board.

“This building is significant as it is a symbol of our inclusive policies as spelt out in our post-Covid-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030.

“This is our pride in Sarawak and we hope Unifor will continue to play its role to unite the people,” he told reporters during a site visit to the complex yesterday.

Uggah said unity was critical to ensure that Sarawak would achieve its vision of becoming a high-income state with economic prosperity, social inclusivity and environmental sustainability by 2030.

“Unifor will do its best to coordinate the non-Islamic religious bodies in Sarawak to build unity and ensure development,” he said.

Unifor was set up in 2017 by the Sarawak government to look after the welfare of non-Muslims and provide financial assistance for the physical development and upgrading of their houses of worship.

Uggah said the Unifor Complex was 99.37% completed, with the occupation permit expected to be issued this month.

He said renovation works for Unifor and charitable trust offices would start after that.

“This means the place will be occupied by the first quarter of 2025,” he said.

Located at Jalan Ong Tiang Swee here, the complex will have a nine-storey office tower and nine shop lots.

It will also have a hall that can accommodate 1,000 people.
