Elderly couple injured after car bursts into flames following crash in KK


KOTA KINABALU: A couple were injured when their vehicle caught fire after crashing into a wall in the city here on Thursday (Aug 15).

The couple, in their 60s, were traveling near Taman Ria when the driver accidentally crashed into the cemented brick part of a gate at around 5.30pm, Thursday.

Sabah Fire and Rescue commanding officer for the Lintas station, Wilfred Sulai said based on witness accounts, both the victims were conscious after the mishap.

“We were informed that passers-by who saw the accident and vehicle fire had rushed to help them and tried to put out the flames using fire extinguishers but failed,” he said.

It is learnt that the victims managed to get out of the car but there was an explosion from the engine area, causing some injuries to the duo.

Someone who was at the scene took the victims to the hospital while others called for emergency assistance.

Firemen received a distress call at around 5.42pm and arrived at the scene at 5.49pm.

The flames were brought under control by 6pm and firemen wrapped up their operations on site at 6.50pm.

No other casualties were reported while the victims are in stable conditions.
