KOTA KINABALU: Datuk Ewon Benedick has called on Malaysians in Sabah to embrace the Jalur Gemilang campaign as not a merely simple event but an avenue to show their patriotism and love for their country.

The Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives Minister said the state's residents must also unite to defend the nation’s sovereignty and independence.

He said that, hence, the state-level Kembara Merdeka Jalur Gemilang campaign is a significant programme held in conjunction with National Month.

“The Kembara Merdeka Jalur Gemilang is important to keep the spirit of patriotism burning among the people throughout the country,” he said on Thursday (Aug 8).

“Besides this, the programme is also vital towards uniting and reminding Malaysians that we must be together in protecting the country’s sovereignty,” he added.

Benedick was speaking during the flag-off of the state-level Jalur Gemilang convoy, which was held in Penampang near here in lieu of the National Month and Sabah Day 2024 celebrations.

The Penampang MP explained that, during Malaysia’s formation, outsiders from other countries did not agree with it, adding that there were still claims about Sabah being brought overseas.

“That is why today's Malaysian government and the present leadership set up a special team to fight all these efforts.

“This shows a big commitment by the Federal Government towards Sabah’s sovereignty while Sabahans and the state government were also committed to defending this sovereignty.

As such, Benedick said he hoped Sabah would remain a sovereign territory within Malaysia forever.
