Driver killed after losing control on bridge

BALIK PULAU: A security officer was killed after he lost control of his vehicle at KM18.2 of the Sultan Abdul Halim Muadzam Shah Bridge yesterday morning.

Balik Pulau OCPD Supt Kamarul Rizal Jenal said in the 6am incident, M. Guna, 29, was confirmed dead at the scene by medical personnel.

Supt Kamarul said initial investigation found that the incident occurred while the victim was driving alone from Batu Kawan to Batu Maung. He said upon reaching the scene, the vehicle skidded, spun around and collided with the motorcycle lane barrier at the left lane of the road.

Supt Kamarul said Fire and Rescue Department personnel helped retrieve the body from the wreckage.

“Further checks found the deceased had a valid driving licence, though the road tax of the vehicle expired in March,” he said, adding the body was sent for a postmortem to determine the cause of death. He said police will review closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage and track eyewitnesses of the incident to assist with the investigation.

The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
