Six 'fake' maintenance workers detained while stealing telco cables

AMPANG: Six men who posed as maintenance workers were detained while stealing telecommunication cables in Jalan Besar Enggang AU2 here.

Ampang Jaya OCPD Asst Comm Mohd Azam Ismail said a police patrol stumbled upon the suspects at about 2.45am last Saturday (Aug 3).

"Five men were supposedly doing maintenance work while another was in a manhole cutting cables.

"Further checks revealed that the suspects had already cut off the cables and were in the process of pulling it out from the manhole," he said in a statement on Monday (Aug 5).

One of the suspects claimed to be a supervisor and showed the police a TM maintenance work letter, he said.

"However, when we checked with a TM official, who was summoned to the site, it was revealed that the letter was a fake.

" We detained six men aged between 20 and 32.

"We also seized several items, including a van, a four-wheel drive, a few signage, cones, TM t-shirts, and steel cutters," he said.

ACP Mohd Azam said two of the suspects had criminal records and all of them tested negative for drugs.

"The suspects have been remanded until Tuesday (Aug 6)," he said. (Ends)
