Cop and lorry driver remanded over RM10,000 bribe

GEORGE TOWN: A police sergeant is one of two men remanded here on suspicion of receiving a RM10,000 bribe.

The Penang Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) said in a statement on Friday (July 26) that the sergeant and a lorry driver were remanded on suspicion of conspiring to ask for and accept the bribe in connection with a theft case.

"A remand order for two days until Saturday (July 27) was issued for the policeman while an order for four days until Monday (July 29) was issued for the lorry driver.

"Magistrate Mohamad Azlan Basri acting as the court registrar issued the order on Friday at a George Town Magistrate's Court upon application by MACC," the statement read.

It further said the two men, both in their 30s, were arrested between 10pm and midnight on Thursday (July 25) when they were at the state MACC office to provide details of the case.

"Preliminary investigations found that the two suspects conspired to request and receive bribes from a man in return for solving a theft case involving his fiancee," it said.

Penang MACC director Mohd Fuad Bee Basrah said the case is being investigated under Section 16(a)(A) of the MACC Act 2009.
