Sabah sees improvement in STPM results over 2022

KOTA KINABALU: Less than 5% of Sabah’s 7,982 STPM 2023 candidates managed to pass all five subjects, although an improvement was seen over the previous year.

According to Sabah Education Department director Datuk Raisin Saidin, those scoring full passes with grades A to C accounted for 4.84% (386 students), a 0.21 percentage point increase from 4.63% in 2022.

Students with full passes in four subjects (grades A to C) increased from 68.59% in 2022 to 70.21% in 2023, he said in announcing the state's STPM results analysis on Tuesday (July 23).

He said in terms of STPM certificate eligibility, there was also improvement as only one candidate in Sabah was unable to get a scroll.

Raisin said 99.99% of the total candidates for last year managed to get STPM certificates (those who manage to pass at least one subject are eligible to get a certificate).

Those who achieved 5As increased from three to seven students last year while 4A scores increased from 72 in 2022 to 123 last year, he said, 97% of them from B40 families.

As for the cumulative grade point average (CGPA), a total of eight districts – Kota Kinabalu, Semporna, Tawau, Tuaran, Papar, Sipitang, Penampang and Kunak – achieved a 2.84 CGPA, while 13 districts achieved a 2.76 CGPA and above, he said.

These include Kuala Penyu, Sandakan, Beluran, Lahad Datu and Beaufort.

He said a total of 130 candidates or 1.56% of those who sat for STPM 2023 in Sabah achieved a 4.00 CGPA, which is an increase of 55 candidates from 2022.
