Teen girl drowns while swimming with family in Skudai

JOHOR BARU: A teenage girl drowned while her four siblings managed to escape during a swimming outing in Skudai here.

Skudai Fire and Rescue Department operations commander Khairul Anuar said they received an emergency call about the incident at 3.38pm on Friday (July 19).

A team of firemen arrived at the scene 10 minutes later at the river in Taman Pulai Perdana.

"The five children were swimming a bit too far into the stream and suddenly started struggling. This prompted the father to jump to their rescue.

“Their father managed to save four of them - three girls aged five, eight and 16, and a 12-year-old boy.

“He did not manage to save his 14-year-old daughter,” he said in a statement.

Khairul added that the firemen searched for the victim in the area and found her about 4m away from the river bank.

“Cardiopulmonary resuscitation was performed on her for about 40mins before the Health Department arrived and pronounced her dead at the scene,” he said.

He added that the victim’s body was sent to Hospital Sultanah Aminah.
