Wanted man high on drugs arrested after 5km high-speed chase in Penang

GEORGE TOWN: A 36-year-old man who was high on drugs led police on a 5km high-speed chase.

The man tried to evade arrest during a traffic police operation at Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu Expressway here.

Balik Pulau OCPD Supt Kamarul Rizal Jenal said the suspect was arrested on Jalan Dato Ismail Hashim in Bayan Lepas during Ops Perdagangan at about 8am.

"Police stopped the vehicle for an inspection but the suspect, who was driving a van, sped away, prompting police to give chase," he said in a statement on Wednesday (July 10).

Supt Kamarul said police fired a shot at the suspect's vehicle after he tried to ram the police, causing it to veer off the road and come to a halt on the road shoulder.

He said initial investigations showed the suspect did not have a driving licence and has a criminal record.

"The suspect also tested positive for methamphetamine and is wanted over a drug-related case," he said.

Supt Kamarul said several parked vehicles were damaged during the chase.

The case is being investigated under Section 307 of the Penal Code for attempted murder and Section 39 of the Firearms Act.
