PASIR GUDANG: A 44-year-old housewife lost more than RM120,000 after falling for an online job scam that was offered to her by an unknown individual.

Seri Alam OCPD Supt Mohd Sohaimi Ishak, said the victim, who used to work at a printing factory, was approached by the scammers through social media back in May this year.

“The scammers had given her a link to a website and offered her a job to sell hotel packages with 15% commission if she managed to sell five-star packages and 10% commission for hotels below five-star.

“She, however, must first make a payment as a capital for investment, a tax payment for profit, and the processing fee to withdraw her investment,” he said in a statement here on Tuesday (July 9).

Supt Mohd Sohaimi added that the victim who fell for the scam then registered herself and made 17 financial transactions to six different bank accounts.

“The transfers were made between May 17 and May 28, amounting to RM126,490.

“At first, the victim had managed to sell hotel packages and received a commission worth more than 100%.

“The victim was also shown the alleged ‘profit’ that she had made through the website,” he said, adding that her happiness was short-lived after her attempt to withdraw the commission failed.

“The scammers have requested the victim to make an additional payment; the victim then lodged a police report on July 5,” he said.

The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating.
