Court orders mental health check on man accused of mum's murder

JEMPOL: A 33-year-old man who allegedly murdered his mother has been ordered to undergo psychiatric evaluation.

Bahau Magistrate Norshazwani Ishak made the order on Wednesday (July 3) following an application by DPP Farahidah Zool Beri that the suspect’s mental status be confirmed before a confession is recorded.

Farahidah said the evaluation was necessary as it is believed that the suspect is of unsound mind.

The court then ordered the accused to undergo the evaluation for a month at Hospital Permai in Johor.

Norshazwani fixed Aug 5 for next mention and to allow the court to obtain a health report on the accused.

Police arrested the suspect, the 63-year-old victim's oldest child, at their home in Bahau on June 25.

They received a call at around noon that day about a quarrel between the suspect and the deceased.

When police arrived, they found the deceased sprawled in the front yard.

The case is being probed under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder.
