Sg Bakap: PN candidate courts rival grassroots leaders

NIBONG TEBAL: Perikatan Nasional candidate Abidin Ismail is doubling efforts to woo Umno members to vote for the opposition coalition in the Sungai Bakap state by-election.

Abidin said he met with Umno grassroots leaders in the constituency and could feel the wave of support.

"God willing, with the movement and effort we have made now, I can feel the wave is still there," he said during his campaign trail near Masjid Kepala Gajah here on Wednesday (June 26) night.

He said he would continue to reach out to Umno members who voted Perikatan in the last election to ensure the coalition wins with a bigger majority.

The Nibong Tebal PAS division deputy chief said he and his team have reached more than 50% of the voters in the constituency.

He said response from the voters has been positive and the opposition coalition was well received by the people they met.

In the last state election, Perikatan won the state seat through Nor Zamri Latiff who defeated Pakatan Harapan candidate Nurhidayah Che Rose with a majority of 1,563 votes.

Nor Zamri won votes in six district polling stations out of eight in Sungai Bakap.

The opposition lost Puteri Gunung and Sungai Bakap PDM.

The Sungai Bakap by-election will see a straight fight between Abidin and Pakatan Harapan candidate Dr Joohari Ariffin.

Of the 39,279 eligible to vote in the by-election, 39,222 are ordinary voters, and 57 are police personnel.
