Nightclub DJ on trial accuses cops of assault


MELAKA: A 26-year-old nightclub deejay brought to court to face a charge of obstructing police officers at work instead said he was assaulted by the cops.

Ngo Wei Kian made the claim when he pleaded not guilty to the charge before magistrate Khairunnisak Hassni in Ayer Keroh here yesterday.In his appeal, the accused told the court, through his lawyer Cassian Anthony, that he was the one assaulted by four cops during the incident.

Based on the charge sheet, Ngo had allegedly obstructed the police officers from performing their duties as public servants by speeding off in a car to evade arrest after being instructed to stop by Insp Mohamad Asyraf Mohamad Mokhtar.

The incident is alleged to have occurred around 1.20am at Tengkera in Melaka Tengah district on June 21.The charge was framed under Section 186 of the Penal Code, which carries a penalty of up to two years’ jail or a fine of up to RM10,000, or both, upon conviction.

Deputy public prosecutor Wardah Isshar prosecuted.

Anthony told the court that his client was sitting as a passenger in a car driven by his elder brother when it was stopped at a police roadblock and a summons was issued to the driver.

He said Ngo had alighted from the car to inquire about the summons before being allegedly assaulted by the cops to the point of needing medical treatment.

Anthony also told the court that his client would be filing a separate report on the incident with the police’s Integrity and Standards Compliance Department.

Ngo is also represented by lawyers Kent Tan and Francis Augustine.

The court later granted bail of RM2,500 with one surety and set July 24 for the next mention.
