Two killed in separate accidents in Sabah

KOTA KINABALU: A mechanic died after he lost control of his car, which skidded into a water pipeline before landing in a ditch.

The 20-something man was trapped in his car and died at the scene in the 5am tragedy along Jalan Tuaran in Manggatal near here yesterday, said Kota Kinabalu City police chief Asst Comm Kasim Muda.

He said a woman passenger in the vehicle was seriously injured. She was sent to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital for further treatment.

The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act, he added.

A spokesman from the Sabah Fire and Rescue Department’s operations centre said firemen took about an hour to remove the trapped victims with the use of special equipment.

In an unrelated accident, a motorcyclist died and a pillion rider was seriously injured after the motorcycle they were on collided with a four-wheel drive in Bukit Barasanon on the Keningau-Sook road.

In the incident at 11.40pm on Saturday, the 20-year-old Indonesian motorcyclist was confirmed dead at the scene.

The 21-year-old pillion rider was sent to Keningau Hospital.

Keningau Fire and Rescue Station chief Sharudy Delamin said four people in the four-wheel drive, aged 30 to 40, suffered minor injuries and were given initial treatment by an Emergency Medical Rescue Services team.

“The motorcyclist was confirmed dead at the scene of the incident by a medical officer.”

He added that the victim’s body was handed over to the police before being taken to the hospital for a post-mortem.
