Primary school block in Tawau destroyed in midnight fire

KOTA KINABALU: A block of a primary school in Sabah's east coast Tawau district was razed after a fire broke out at around midnight on Saturday (June 22).

A Fire and Rescue Department spokesman said the wooden block of Sekolah Kebangsaan Abaka was destroyed.

Firefighters brought the fire under control by 1.20am on Sunday (June 23) and extinguished it 10 minutes later, he said.

He said the distress call came in at 12.06am, and added that there were no victims in the incident.

"We are still investigating to determine the cause of the fire," he said.

Sabah Education director Datuk Raisin Saidin said they were informed of the incident and immediate steps were being taken to ensure that lessons were not disrupted.

He said he had instructed the district Education office to put in place the necessary temporary measures.

The block was used by Year Four, Five and Six pupils, he added.
