Five-year-old girl dies after hit by van in Johor

JOHOR BARU: A five-year-old preschool student died after being hit by a school van in front of her family’s house along Jalan Suria in Bandar Seri Alam here.

Seri Alam OCPD Supt Mohd Sohaimi Ishak said the accident happened around 11.35am on Wednesday (June 19).

“The incident occurred when the 50-year-old female school van driver had dropped off the victim and her six-year-old brother in front of their house.

“The driver then decided to drive forward after seeing the brother walking at the back of the van assuming the victim was following him.

“However, as the van moved forward, it hit the victim who was walking in front of the vehicle as the driver did not realise her presence,” he said in a statement on Wednesday night.

Supt Mohd Sohaimi added due to the collision, the victim sustained serious injuries. The driver immediately got out of the van and informed the victim’s mother.

He said the victim’s mother then brought her daughter to Masai Health Clinic but the medical officer there confirmed the victim’s death.

“Police have since detained the suspect for investigation and the case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987,” he added.
