Cops bust illegal gambling centre operating in a family entertainment outlet in Johor Baru

JOHOR BARU: Police have uncovered a gambling centre that has been operating in a family entertainment outlet.

Johor police chief Comm M. Kumar said a team from the state’s Anti-Vice, Gambling and Secret Societies division raided the centre at Jalan Sutera, Taman Sentosa, here at 8.25pm on Wednesday (May 29).

“We suspected them of having gambling machines and illegal gambling activities within the premises.

“True enough, when we raided the outlet after obtaining a search warrant, we found about 220 coupons valued at RM10 to RM1,000, three gambling machines and chips that can be topped up with money,” he said in a statement on Thursday (May 30).

He added that the items were seized, along with others such as internet modems, record books, chairs and a business licence.

He said the seized items were valued at about RM75,000, adding that the case was being investigated under Section 4B(A) of the Common Gaming Houses Act 1953, which carries a fine of RM10,000 to RM100,000 for each machine and a jail term of up to five years.

Comm Kumar said the police would continue carrying out total enforcement against illegal gambling, including cutting the power source of premises.

Those with information about such activities are urged to channel it via the Johor police hotline at 07-2212 999.
