Seven arrested in street brawl probe

KOTA KINABALU: Seven suspects aged 14 and above have been arrested by police following a recent street fight in front of the city’s general market.

Kota Kinabalu police chief Asst Comm Kasim Muda said investigations found that the incident was not gang-related.

“We received a report on a video that went viral about the street fight.

“Further checks revealed that the incident was caused by bullying, extortion and dissatisfaction among the groups,” he said in a statement yesterday.

The 32-second video captured a group of children in front of the market engaging in a chase with another group that had gathered at a small roundabout nearby, with scant regard for passing vehicles.

They were also seen hurling objects such as pipes and wooden sticks, with one narrowly missing a parked car.

Meanwhile, ACP Kasim urged the public to refrain from disseminating recordings or comments that could potentially incite unrest.

“Instead of taking it to social media, it would be better to report any criminal activities or incidents to the authorities,” he said.
