RM1.2mil subsidised diesel smuggled through Bukit Kayu Hitam daily, says JPJ

BUKIT KAYU HITAM: Malaysia experiences an estimated RM1.2mil worth of subsidised diesel 'leakage’ daily due to smuggling activities using foreign vehicles at the Immigration, Customs, Quarantine, and Security (ICQS) Complex here.

Road Transport Department deputy director-general (Planning and Operation) Aedy Fadly Ramli said the modus operandi involved using modified vehicles like pick-up trucks and lorries with an additional tank.

He said about RM1.2mil worth of subsidised diesel was seized from 18 different types of vehicles during Ops Tangki in Kuala Muda, Kota Setar and the ICQS from May 15 to 19.

"During the operation, we discovered that the foreign vehicles had modified the tanks to smuggle diesel into neighbouring countries. These smugglers make four to five daily trips to take the diesel across the border,” he told a media conference on Ops Tangki at the ICQS here on Sunday (May 19).

Aedy Fadly said the Road Transport Department will step up its operation to identify such vehicles to prevent the country from suffering further losses.

"Starting this week, we will hold nationwide operations. We have received instructions from the highest level of the Transport Ministry to carry out the operation to curb the smuggling of subsidised diesel,” he said. – Bernama
