DLP implementation in Sabah schools vital, says Warisan

KOTA KINABALU: Sabah must emulate Sarawak in the proactive implementation of the Dual Language Programme (DLP) in state schools, said Warisan vice-president Datuk Junz Wong.

“Sarawak is taking significant steps in enhancing the quality of education by integrating English into critical subject areas, we in Sabah are still waiting for a clear comprehensive plan from the state government," he said.

He said the implementation of DLP in Sarawak, which began in 2020 for Year 1 pupils, serves as a good model that Sabah should emulate.

"This will ensure that our students are not left at a disadvantage," he said in a statement here Wednesday (May 15).

He was commenting on the announcement of Sarawak’s Education, Innovation and Talent Development Minister Datuk Seri Roland Sagah, that from 2026, secondary schools in Sarawak will teach Maths and Science subjects in English.

Wong said that DLP was a crucial element for the future success of our children, enhancing their competitiveness in a global landscape.

“It’s imperative that we adopt a proactive approach towards this essential educational reform. Our children’s ability to thrive in a global economy depends on their proficiency in global languages like English,” he added.

Wong voiced his concern that there was a lack of a comprehensive educational plan for the adoption of DLP in Sabah.

He said that the state government must be committed to improving the education sector.
