Reuters denies reporting Malaysia as a state sponsor for terror

KUALA LUMPUR: Reuters has denied posting a news article that Malaysia was the first country in the region to be a state sponsor of terror.

"Any claims that Reuters reported that Malaysia is the first country in Southeast Asia to be listed by the country in Southeast Asia to be listed by the United States as a state sponsor of terror is false," the news agency posted on its X platform.

Reuters said it did not report this in response to a news article that has been widely shared on social media, especially on the instant messaging service provider WhatsApp.

The US Embassy in Kuala Lumpur went to to its social media accounts to call the viral post a hoax.

"The United States has not imposed any new sanctions on Malaysian companies nor listed Malaysia as a state sponsor of terror.

"The hoax below circulating on WhatsApp and other social media is fake news," said the Embassy in a post on X.
