Joyride date goes down the ditch

MELAKA: A 26-year-old woman from Telok Gong here unassumingly went on her first date with a man she got to know online.

However, she regretted her decision after being caught in a police chase when a patrol car spotted their vehicle at a forest reserve site in Masjid Tanah here.

Alor Gajah OCPD Supt Ashari Abdul Samah said in the 9.30pm incident on Thursday, police signalled for the car to stop but the driver accelerated and a high-speed chase ensued.

The 30-year-old driver then abandoned the woman by the roadside.

“He subsequently lost control of his car and the vehicle hit the riverbank at Paya Lebar.

“The man then swam across the river in his bid to flee from police,” Supt Ashari said yesterday.

He said the couple’s car almost hit a motorcycle while making their getaway.

Supt Ashari said the woman was rescued by police and sent to her relative’s house in Teluk Gong.

He added that the man had a criminal record related to drug abuse.

Supt Ashari said the woman told police that both of them were afraid of being accused of “close proximity” when the patrol car sighted them.
