Immigration nabs 52 foreigners, two locals in raids on JB factories

JOHOR BARU: The Johor Immigration Department has detained 52 undocumented migrants and two locals in two separate raids here.

Its acting director Mohd Faizal Shamsudin said the suspects, between 20 and 46 years old, were arrested at around 11am on Wednesday (May 8).

"We raided two factories around the Iskandar Puteri area after receiving a public tip-off about foreigners working without permits and travel documents.

"A total of 76 individuals, both foreigners and locals, were inspected during the operation involving bread and aluminium factories," he said in a statement on Thursday (May 9).

He said following checks on the two factories, the department arrested 52 foreigners from Pakistan, Myanmar, China, Bangladesh and Nepal on suspicion of committing immigration offences.

"A total of 26 foreigners were arrested in the aluminium factory, along with a local woman, the manager.

"The other 26 foreigners were arrested at the bread factory. A local, who is the factory's director, was also arrested," he said.

He said the case is being investigated under Section 6(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63 for not having valid travel documents, Section 15(1)(c) of the same Act for overstaying and Section 39(b) of the Immigration Regulations 1963 for abuse of social visit passes.

He added that three notices to be present at the department's office have also been issued to assist in investigations.
