KOTA KINABALU: Sabah has registered its first batch of 10 companies that will undertake the installation of solar photovoltaic (PV) or solar power systems within the state.
This was announced by state sector regulator Energy Commission of Sabah (Ecos), for the new category of electrical contractor - Electrical Contractor with Class PV (grid-connected) or ECCPV (GC).
This new category established by the Electricity Supply Enactment 2024 allows Ecos to effectively regulate the installation of PV systems within Sabah.
Ecos aims to guarantee the safety and reliable operation of these systems for users and solar asset owners in the state by ensuring all installations are completed by qualified professionals.
“Ecos extends its heartfelt congratulations to the pioneering individuals who have become the first batch of registered ECCPV (GC) contractors in Sabah,” said Ecos chief executive officer Datuk Abd Nasser Abd Wahid during the licence certificate presentation ceremony to the 10 contractor companies here on Monday (May 6).
He said the contractors had been carefully assessed, adding that they have the required qualifications and experiences.
The event, he added, also marked a significant milestone for both Ecos and the renewable energy sector in Sabah, and is crucial for the successful roll-out of solar energy programmes in the state.
“The Grid-connected Solar Photovoltaic System for Self Consumption programme in Sabah (Selco – PV Sabah) is a programme initiated by Ecos to allow consumers in Sabah to install solar PV systems on their own premise for ‘self-consumption’,” he said.
Abd Nasser said the Selco-PV programme allowed consumers to generate their own electricity which in turn would lower their electricity bills from the utility, making them more self-reliant, and help reduce the use of fossil fuels, and to promote clean energy.
“We hope more consumers will participate in this programme as this initiative also helps to relieve the current shortage of generation capacity during the daytime.
“Ecos will continue to increase renewable energy mix and identify new energy sources as well as technologies for the long term, in line with the Sabah Energy Roadmap and Master Plan 2040 (SE-RAMP 2040) which was launched last September,” he said.
