JOHOR BARU: The Johor Road Transport Department (JPJ) issued 14,407 summonses for various offences during the Hari Raya Aidilfitri period, says state director Azmil Zainan Adnan.
He said that 60,230 vehicles were inspected during its 20-day operation which began on April 1.
“We did not conduct any roadblocks as we did not want to cause further congestion during the ‘balik kampung’ rush or obstruct traffic. Instead, we conducted operations at 12 accident-prone hotspots statewide to look for traffic offenders,” he told reporters during the department’s Hari Raya open house at the Johor JPJ office here on Monday (April 29).
He added that the state JPJ initially expected to issue 12,000 summonses throughout the operation but ended up exceeding its target.
Out of the total summonses issued, 9,087 were handed out to motorcyclists, 235 to public transport vehicles such as buses and taxis and 1,406 to commercial vehicles, Azmil Zainan said.
He added that the rest of the summonses were issued to other vehicle owners for offences such as driving without a driver’s licence or road tax, disobeying the traffic light, speeding, and overtaking other vehicles in an unruly manner.
Besides that, 2,577 summonses were issued for technical offences including excessive vehicle modification, tinted windows that did not meet JPJ standards and failure to maintain the vehicle, he said.
