Melaka ‘oldies’ on a mission to bring back state’s sporting glory

MELAKA: They are the “old boys and girls” of their school. Yet, these “oldies” in their 70s are all pumped up to help revive Melaka’s sporting glory.

These former students from Class of 1971 and 1973 of Melaka High School, who will gather for a reunion on May 18 to mark their 50th anniversary, are on a mission to stop the decline of sports in the state.

“The decline is not due to a lack of spirit or commitment among the youth but rather a shortage of proper sporting facilities.

“Besides, young people now prefer to play internet games instead of being out there playing football or hockey,” said Tay Bian How (pic), who coordinates the golden jubilee reunion.

In an interview, Tay recalled proudly the glory days of the Malacca Club, which had been the “training ground” for many sportsmen who represented the state and country in hockey and cricket.

He estimated that over 80% of Melaka’s hockey and cricket talents had learnt the game on the Malacca Club grounds.

“The field there was where these sportsmen picked up their skills. They were eventually spotted by sports officials scouting for talent,” he added.

He said a majority of the star players came from Kampung Banda Kaba and Banda Hilir, which were a stone’s throw from the Malacca Club.

But the acquisition of the Malacca Club to make way for development virtually ended the interest for hockey, cricket, netball and tennis in the state, he claimed.

“The absence of competitive inter-club games in the state added to the declining popularity of such sports,” he said.

So for the coming reunion, Tay said that the former students are hoping for a memorable gathering.

They are also seeking to look into ways to promote field sport activities like the good old days.

“We want to play a role in finding ways to revive sports excellence in the state,” he said.
