Motorcyclist sheltering from rain dies after being hit by SUV in Papar

The SUV is believed to have veered onto the left side of the road before hitting a motorcyclist that was taking shelter from the heavy rain along Kilometre 20 of the Pan Borneo Highway on Wednesday (April 24).

KOTA KINABALU: A motorcyclist seeking shelter from the rain in a small roadside hut was killed when an SUV hit him at KM20 of the Pan Borneo Highway on Wednesday (April 24).

Papar OCPD Supt Kamaruddin Ambo Sakka said the 42-year-old SUV driver was travelling towards Beaufort when he lost control of his vehicle and hit the victim at around 3.30pm.

“It was raining heavily and we believe the vehicle swerved onto the left road shoulder, hitting the 48-year-old victim who was resting under a small hut, just a few steps from a grocery shop,” Supt Kamaruddin said on Thursday (April 25).

He added that the victim sustained severe injuries to his body and legs from the impact, and was pronounced dead at the scene by medical assistants from Hospital Papar.

“Both the driver and passenger of the SUV escaped unhurt. The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987," he said.
