Coalitions to announce their candidates this week

PETALING JAYA: Pakatan Harapan and Perikatan Nasional are set to unveil their candidates for the upcoming Kuala Kubu Baharu by-election this week.

Pakatan is slated to announce its candidate tomorrow while Perikatan will announce its candidate on Thursday.

Pakatan election director for the Kuala Kubu Baharu state seat Ng Sze Han confirmed this when contacted.

He said the candidate will likely be announced in the constituency itself but declined to divulge details.

The state seat became vacant following the death of its incumbent Lee Kee Hiong of DAP on March 21.

Lee, 58, who had been the assemblyman for Kuala Kubu Baharu, which is under the Hulu Selangor parliamentary constituency, since 2013, had been battling cancer for several years.

The Election Commission announced on April 4 that nominations will be on April 27 and polling will take place on May 11.

Selangor Perikatan chairman Datuk Seri Azmin Ali said Perikatan will announce its candidate on Thursday, but remained tight-lipped over details.

He said the ability to win would be the top consideration for the Opposition’s candidate.

Gerakan earlier announced its intention to contest again for the Kuala Kubu Baharu seat.

Its president Datuk Dr Dominic Lau said the matter was decided by the party’s central committee. However, Kedah Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor, who is also Perikatan’s national election director, insisted that a Malay candidate should be fielded.

He added that the candidate could be from any Perikatan component party.
