A POLITICAL party supporter severed his own finger after being told by other voters that his candidate of choice would have no chance in India’s general election, which began last Friday, Malaysia Nanban reported.

Durai Ramalingam had been canvassing for votes in support of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate for the Coimbatore seat, K. Annamalai.

Annamalai is leading the push into South India by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s BJP during the six-week general election.

At a campaign stop in one of the towns in Coimbatore, some voters told party workers, including Ramalingam, that Annamalai would not win.

Upset, he took a knife and severed his left index finger in front of a shocked crowd.

“BJP members are putting their lives on the line to ensure its victory in Tamil Nadu,” he proclaimed.

Bystanders helped get Ramalingam to a hospital.
