AI Sandbox programme expected to create 900 startups and 13,000 new talents by 2026

KUALA LUMPUR: The newly launched Artificial Intelligence (AI) Sandbox pilot programme is expected to create up to 900 AI startups and 13,0000 new talents by 2026, says the Science, Technology and Innovation Minister.

Chang Lih Kang said that the AI Sandbox pilot programme is a collaboration between his minister, the Higher Education Minister and Nvidia.

“The sandbox envisions facilitating the establishment of up to 900 AI startups by 2026.

“Through collaboration with the Higher Education Ministry, we also estimate that over 13,000 new AI talents will be cultivated by 2026,” said Chang during his speech at the launch of the AI Sandbox pilot programme at the Malaysian Research Accelerator for Technology and Innovation (Mranti) Park in Bukit Jalil on Thursday (April 18).

Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abd Kadir, Nvidia Vice President Keith Strier and Mranti chief executive officer Datuk Dr Rais Hussin were also present during the launch.

During a press conference after the event, Zambry said the government has a clear national AI policy.

He said an AI Faculty will soon be launched, and it will involve 20 public universities and 20 private universities.

Under the pilot programme, participants would gain access to specialised labs.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim will launch the first AI Faculty at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) on May 10. The university is expected to begin its academic programme in October this year.
