Zafrul: Reform in order to progress

Selangor Umno also urged to be open to feedback ideas from grassroots

KLANG: Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz (pic) has offered several pointers on how Umno can rise above the quagmire that it is facing in Selangor.

In a Facebook post, the former Selangor Umno treasurer, who remains an Umno supreme council member, said Selangor Umno must restore its past glory, and with several changes needed to bring it back to relevance.

This involves being open to feedback ideas from the grassroots, prioritise policy recommendations, as well as having the ability to use data and analysis accurately.

“We must also seek out the future generation with an open heart.

“This is important as at the end of the day, Selangor Umno will be judged by the people based on the leaders it promotes,’’ said Tengku Zafrul.

He said there was also a need to formulate a win-win framework with political friends in the state.

“Most importantly, we must apply a new political culture that is intellectual, focuses on solutions and policies, and get rid of ‘cah keting’ (internal sabotage).

“Because if we do not change the culture, it does not matter how big our vision is, we will remain powerless,’’ added Tengku Zafrul, who is the Kota Raja Umno division chief.

When attending a recent breaking of fast event at the Kota Raja Umno division, where the branch annual meeting was also simultaneously launched, Tengku Zafrul said he has a deep desire to see Selangor Umno return to its glorious past.

He narrated how Selangor Umno performed its worst in the 2022 general election by not even winning a single seat, followed by the 2023 state polls where it only won two seats.

“When Selangor Umno lost badly in the Selangor state polls, I had said it was the last warning.

“If the state polls results still have not opened Selangor Umno’s eyes, nothing can open Selangor Umno’s eyes.

“It’s been eight months after the state polls, still nothing. In-depth post-mortem (of the performance)? None.

“New strategy to capture the people’s hearts? None,’’ he lamented.

Tengku Zafrul said if the state Umno does not take him seriously, then it is better for him to concentrate on helping the party at central and division levels.

“I am still committed to the Kota Raja Umno division and Selangor Umno because I am certain we collectively share the same dream to see Selangor Umno return to being relevant and respected,’’ he said, while acknowledging that the path will not be an easy one, with lots of hard work required.

“But these are necessary for our dreams to be realised,” said Tengku Zafrul.

When he resigned as the Selangor Umno treasurer earlier in the week, he said this had to do with Selangor Umno’s lacklustre approach towards implementing initiatives formulated by the party’s central level.
