Over 1,400 3R complaints received by MCMC as of March this year, says Teo

KULAI: The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has received over 1,400 complaints about race, religion and royalty (3R) issues in the first three months of this year alone, says Teo Nie Ching (pic).

The Deputy Communications Minister said that this was a significant increase compared to last year where a total of 1,633 were reported throughout the whole year.

“Last year, the MCMC received a total of 1,633 complaints about 3R issues, where 960 are on content related to race, 519 on religion and 154 on royalty.

”As of March 31, it has already received 1,454 complaints about such issues. Of the number, 727 are related to religion, 588 to race, and 139 to royalty.

“This is a very worrying trend. We are also now facing a by-election, and normally when there is an election, 3R issues will be brought up more frequently,” she told reporters when met after visiting SJKC Sawit here on Sunday (April 7).

She said 3R issues are among the things that the ministry will bring up during their meeting with Meta (Facebook’s parent company) on Monday (April 8).

“There may be certain groups that are purposely playing with 3R issues. I believe that there are invisible hands that are engineering such online content

“As such, I would like to urge all Malaysians and internet users to not easily fall for such hateful content and speeches,” she said.

On Saturday (April 6), National Unity Minister Datuk Aaron Ago Dagang also revealed that there has been a 123% increase in the number of cases its eSepakat system received in the first quarter of this year compared to the same period last year.
