40,000 voters likely to go to the polls, with nomination set for April 27

PUTRAJAYA: Some 40,000 voters in Kuala Kubu Baharu in Selangor will go to the polls on May 11 to elect their new assemblyperson after the death of former state lawmaker Lee Kee Hiong.

Early voting is on May 7, while nomination day has been set for April 27, said Election Commission chairman Datuk Abdul Ghani Salleh.

It will be the second time that the state constituency is going to the polls after the Selangor elections in August last year, and it is the seventh by-election after the 15th General Election in 2022.

Past by-elections had been held for the Kuala Terengganu, Kemanan and Pulai parliamentary seats and Simpang Jeram (Johor), Pelangai (Pahang), and Jepak (Sarawak) state seats.

Abdul Ghani said a total of 40,226 individuals would be eligible to vote in the by-election.

Of that figure, 39,363 are regular voters, 238 are members of the are members of the armed forces and their spouses, and 625 are police personnel and spouses.

There are 11,890 voters who are 30 years and younger, 21,373 between the ages of 30 and 59, and 6,294 voters aged 60 to 79. The seat has 588 voters who are between 80 and 89 years old.

“The estimated cost to carry out the by-election is RM2.5mil,” he told a press conference yesterday.

The state seat fell vacant following the death of its three-term assemblyperson, Lee, who passed away on March 21 after a battle with cancer. She was 58.

The EC was notified of the vacancy on March 26.

Abdul Ghani said that 750 officers would be assigned to manage the by-election, which has an official campaign period of 14 days.

There will be 18 polling centres with 74 channels, while two voting centres will be prepared for the early voting process.

Abdul Ghani said the nomination centre and the official ballot tallying centre will be at the Hulu Selangor Sports Complex.

“We are offering government agencies and non-government organisations to observe the by-election process,” he added.

Voters can check their voting information at https://mysprsemak.spr.gov.my, the EC hotline at 03-88927218 or through the MySpr Semak application.
