Man loses RM230,000 to online investment scam

SEREMBAN: A man has been duped out of almost RM230,000 after investing his savings in an online investment scam.

Nilai OCPD Supt Abdul Malik Hasim said the victim, who is in his 30s, lodged a report on Wednesday (April 3) upon realising that he had been scammed.

"The victim claimed he had received a call from a man on Jan 15 offering him an online investment scheme purportedly linked to the Goldman Sachs Group.

"The caller urged the victim to invest as the returns were unusually high," he said.

Supt Abdul Malik said the victim believed the stranger and transferred cash into several bank accounts via eleven transactions.

However, the victim only realised that he had been cheated as he could neither withdraw his so-called profits or capital.

The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating and carries a jail term of between one and 10 years, whipping and a fine upon conviction.

He advised those planning to make online investments, especially schemes that offered unusually high returns to check with the authorities or Bank Negara before investing.

The public can also call the police's CCID Scam Response Centre at 03-2610 1559 or 03-2610 1599 for additional information.
