IPOH: Perak Umno is prepared to face any by-elections resulting from amendments to Bersatu's constitution, says Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad.

The Mentri Besar said the party is always prepared in the event of a by-election being called.

"If there aren't any, there will be no problems and we will prepare for the next general election," he told a press conference after presenting Hari Raya goodies to uniformed units and other agencies at the State Secretariat building here on Wednesday (April 3).

He had been asked if Umno was prepared to face by-elections following the approval of amendments to Bersatu's constitution to revoke the membership of elected representatives who go against the party's stand.

The Registrar of Societies (ROS) recently approved the amendments, which came into effect on Monday (April 1).

On March 11, Bersatu president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin and party secretary-general Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin submitted the amendments to RoS after they were approved at a special general assembly on March 2.

The changes to the party constitution were made after six Bersatu MPs declared their support for Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, namely: Datuk Syed Abu Hussin Hafiz Syed Abdul Fasal (Bukit Gantang), Mohd Azizi Abu Naim (Gua Musang), Datuk Zulkafperi Hanapi (Tanjong Karang), Zahari Kechik (Jeli), Datuk Iskandar Dzulkarnain Abdul Khalid (Kuala Kangsar) and Datuk Suhaili Abdul Rahman (Labuan).

On March 7, the party's Selat Klang state assemblyman Datuk Abdul Rashid Asari pledged his support for Selangor Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari.

Saarani said he does not believe that the amendment would have an impact on the six MPs.

"I'm not sure if it will be (retroactive), but it is more for present and future (developments).

"At the same time, the Dewan Rakyat Speaker will have to make a ruling if those impacted by the anti-party hopping law are affected.

"If the Speaker rules that they are affected, there will be six by-elections, including two in Perak," he added.
