Couple pleads guilty to tragic death of toddler

SEREMBAN: A woman and her boyfriend pleaded guilty in Sessions Court here to neglecting her three-year-old daughter, which resulted in her death.

Noraini Haron, 42, and Mohd Khairul Shamsua Israk, 38, did not contest the charge after it was read to them before judge Datin Surita Budin.

The duo were charged with committing the offence on March 18 and 24 between noon and 6.45pm at a house in Port Dickson.

They were charged under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001, read together with Section 34 of the Penal Code.

Offenders can be jailed up to 20 years, fined up to RM50,000, or both, upon conviction.

Deputy public prosecutor Noor Syafina Mohd Radzuan asked the court for another date for sentencing as her team had yet to get a copy of the forensic report.

She also told the court that the prosecution was not offering bail as it was a serious offence.

“We are, however, leaving it to the court’s discretion to offer bail.”

Judge Suriati fixed bail at RM20,000, with one surety for each of the accused.

They were also told to report to the nearest police station once a month until the case is disposed of.

She fixed May 2 for the outcome of the forensic report and sentencing.
