KOTA KINABALU: Firemen have successfully extinguished a week-long fire at the landfill in Kaya Madang, which was fuelled by used tyres.

Sabah Fire and Rescue Department director Abdul Razak Muda said operations ended without any untoward incidents at 3.15pm on Friday.

Firemen from the Tuaran station were staying on site to continue monitoring the area involving some 45,700sq m,” he said yesterday.

A secondary forest fire near the Kayu Madang landfill in Telipok spread quickly to the used tyre dumpsite in Kayu Madang at about noon on March 24.

It sparked a raging fire, with firemen working non-stop by relying on foam retardants and earth filling methods, among others, to fight the fire, which caused the air around here to turn unhealthy.

A total of 41 firemen were on the ground with the help of personnel from Kota Kinabalu City Hall, Civil Defence Corps and Rela.

Equipment-wise, 26 lorries, two excavators, and a tractor were mobilised, while lorries laden with earth made a total of 1,520 trips to bury the tyres during the operations from March 24 to 30.
