KK's landfill fire finally put out after a week

KOTA KINABALU: A fire involving used tyres at the Kaya Madang landfill here has been put out by firemen after a week-long battle with the raging fire.

Sabah Fire and Rescue Department director Abdul Razak Muda said operations ended without any untoward incident at 3.15pm Friday (March 29).

Firemen from the Tuaran station were staying on-site to continue monitoring the area involving some 45,700 square metres," he said Saturday (March 30).

A secondary forest fire near the Kayu Madang landfill in Telipok here spread quickly to the used tyres dumpsite area in Kayu Madang at about noon on March 24.

It sparked a raging fire with firemen working round-the-clock relying on foam retardants, earth filling methods among others to put out the fire during the week-long battle.

The fire also caused the air quality level to turn unhealthy in the Kota Kinabalu area.

During the operations, a total of 41 firemen were on the ground with the help of personnel from the Kota Kinabalu City Hall, Civil Defence Corp and Rela.

Twenty-six lorries, two excavators and a tractor were also mobilised to extinguish the fire.

Lorries laden with earth made a total of 1,520 trips to bury the tyres during the operations.
