Charities hope for more contributions

JOHOR BARU: Non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and welfare homes here hope to see more donations this Ramadan, a month synonymous with the spirit of giving.

Johor Disabled Children Charitable and Cares Organisation president Mohd Yahya Haidrus said since the beginning of the fasting month, more people have come forward to do their bit for charity.

“Ramadan is typically a time when we see more people coming forward to donate or visit residents of welfare homes.

“So far, about seven families have visited our home and spent some time breaking fast with the residents. There has also been an increase in donations since the start of Ramadan.

“We hope to continue seeing this generosity throughout the holy month,” he said in an interview.

Mohd Yahya said donations mean a lot to them as the charity has recorded a sharp decline since the Covid-19 pandemic.

“In general, we are receiving fewer donations compared to pre-pandemic times. However, we can still manage as there are regular donors,” he said.

He added that apart from Ramadan, other festive seasons such as Chinese New Year would see more people visiting and coming forward to lend a helping hand.

Echoing the sentiment was Johor Baru Handicapped and Mentally Disabled Children Association president S. Murugaiyah, who said Malaysians, regardless of race and religion, are particularly generous during festive seasons.

“There are still people who are donating during Ramadan and other festive seasons.

“However, the numbers are not as high as they used to be.

“We understand that many people are also struggling to make ends meet, especially with the rising cost of living.

“We hope those who can afford will continue to do so,” he said.

Murugaiyah said they require about RM120,000 a month to run their charity home in Kulai, half of which goes to paying the workers’ salaries.“Thankfully, we still have regular donors. It has not been easy for NGOs and charitable homes nationwide but we will continue to do our best to cope,” he said.
