Firemen inch closer towards dousing KK landfill blaze

KOTA KINABALU: Firefighters are on the verge of extinguishing the fire at the Kayu Madang landfill in Telipok here that has been raging for six days.

"We have put out about 97% of the fire and are continuing operations to put it out completely," Sabah Fire and Rescue Department assistant director (operations) Hamza Isnurdini said on Friday (March 29).

He said a total of 97.25% of the 45,700sq m area involving a used tyre dump site has so far been doused.

"There is still over 1,200sq m on fire," he said.

He said because of the large area, they were still using special equipment including fixed monitors and high-performance pumps, using foam retardant as well as open water sources.

The operation involves 41 firemen from the Tuaran, Kota Kinabalu, Lintas and Penampang fire stations as well as state headquarters, he added.

The landfill blaze, believed to have spread from an adjacent forest fire, started at about noon on Sunday (March 24).
