54 foreign GROs nabbed in JB nightclub

JOHOR BARU: A raid at an entertainment centre in Taman Mount Austin saw the arrests of 63 people, including 54 foreign women suspected to be working as guest relations officers (GROs).

Johor Immigration Department director Baharuddin Tahir said the suspects, three locals and 60 foreigners, were arrested during the midnight raid on Friday (March 29).

“The detainees, aged 19 to 49, were among 93 people who were checked during the raid.

“Those arrested include 60 foreigners, 54 of whom are women believed to be from Vietnam, Thailand, Indonesia and China,” he said in a statement.

He added that six of the foreigners arrested were men from Vietnam, Indonesia and Nepal who acted as the bouncers and staff at the entertainment centre.

“The women’s job was to accompany their customers and drink with them. They would be given a commission of RM20 for each order their customers make.

“We also arrested two local women and one local man believed to be the caretakers and supervisor of the (GROs),” he said.

Baharuddin said those detained were being investigated for violating immigration laws including some of the women who had misused their pass as a spouse of a Malaysian citizen.

He said the three locals detained were being investigated under Section 56(1)(d) of the Immigration Act 1959/63 for harbouring undocumented migrants.
