Perak's new water tariffs to be announced after Hari Raya, says MB

IPOH: The new water tariff rates for Perak will be announced after Hari Raya Aidilfitri, says Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad.

The Perak Mentri Besar said the new rates were already in place, but the decision to announce it after Hari Raya was to let the people enjoy the festivities.

When asked why the announcement would be made after Hari Raya, Saarani said, "We let the people celebrate Hari Raya with joy. It is not that the new rates are very burdensome, but we don’t want to get them (the public) worried.”

He spoke to the media after the state Agriculture Department launched the “Riang Ria Raya” programme at the Seri Perak Darul Ridzuan field here on Monday (March 26).

Last week, Saarani said that the state government had yet to finalise the new water tariffs for domestic use in the state, as the matter was yet to be discussed in the state executive council meeting.

In February, Saarani had said that the tariff was expected to be announced in March. He had said that the state Water Board would meet on March 1 for a briefing on the new rates.

He said that the last time the water tariffs were increased was in 2006.
