‘Nap’ turns into crash at eatery


MELAKA: A 27-year-old foreigner who dozed off briefly while driving saw his car crash into an eatery outlet in Jalan Bendahara here, says police.

Melaka Tengah OCPD Asst Comm Christopher Patit said the driver sustained injuries in the incident at 8.40pm on Saturday along the stretch, which is located close to the weekend car-free zone in Bandar Hilir.

He said the foreigner, who works as an administrative assistant in Durian Tunggal, has no valid driving licence.He added that the stretch was not busy at the time of the incident.ACP Christopher Patit said the man told the police that he was rushing to Melaka Hospital, where his wife was delivering a baby.

“The man was rushed to the same hospital in an ambulance but his injuries were reportedly minor,” he added.He said the man was driving towards Melaka Hospital from Jalan Bendahara when the incident happened.

Based on police statistics, a total of 1,305 fatalities around the country were attributed to drivers falling asleep due to fatigue between 2011 and 2021.
