KUALA LUMPUR: An IT company has laid claim to the half-a-million ringgit kept inside a suitcase that was left at a shopping mall, but its director has yet to come forward to provide proof.
“He was summoned to the Damansara police station about his police report (over the ownership of the cash). He is required to do so to provide proof and have his statement recorded,” said Selangor police chief Comm Datuk Hussein Omar Khan.
However, he claimed that the 40-something director had not done so and informed the police that he was ill, in addition to having to attend meetings.
“We hope he will do it as soon as possible. Only then can we determine whether the claim is legitimate or otherwise,” he added.
On Wednesday, a suitcase containing over RM500,000 in cash in denominations of RM10, RM50 and RM100 was found at the car park of a shopping centre in Damansara.
According to the police, there was no CCTV camera facing the area where the unlocked pink and white suitcase was found.
Comm Hussein said yesterday that the claimant had lodged a police report in Shah Alam. He stated that the length of the investigation would depend on the proof the company submitted.
The Nepali security guard who found the suitcase containing the cash was rewarded by his employer for his honesty. A5 Security Services presented Sherpa Dawa, 39, with an award and said that his dedication to his job was something to be proud of.
In a Facebook post featuring a photo of the company’s director, Hardeep Singh Jaswant presenting the award to Dawa, the company explained that the guard discovered the bag which had been left unattended.
“He immediately reported it, showing a true sense of responsibility and integrity,” the company said. “Thank you, Mr Dawa, for your exemplary service and being a true hero in our midst.”
The Facebook post led to more praise from others.
“Kasi dia naik pangkat (give him a promotion),” said a Facebook user identified as Ezany.
