GEORGE TOWN: Three individuals, including a husband and wife were arrested on suspicion of involvement in a robbery case in Simpang Ampat.
Penang deputy police chief Deputy Comm Datuk Mohamed Usuf Jan Mohamad said the suspects aged between 27 and 52 were arrested on March 17 and March 18 at three different locations.
"On Feb 27, the man who worked at a dates distributor company at South Seberang Perai, went to a bank at Simpang Ampat to deposit a total of RM143,941 belonging to the company.
"While he was walking to the bank, a man suddenly came to him and grabbed the bag containing the cash from him before fleeing on a motorcycle," he said during a press conference at state police headquarters on Friday (March 22).
DCP Mohamed Usuf said following the incident, a team of police from D9 unit from state police headquarters and South Seberang Perai Criminal Investigation Department (CID) was mobilised to track and arrest the suspect.
He said police arrested a husband and wife at South Seberang Perai aged 36 and 27 and the 52-year-old suspect who worked in the same place with the victim.
He said the 52-year-old man was arrested at his house in Sungai Petani and found stash of cash.
He said that based on investigations, two of the suspects had previous records related to illegal gambling and drugs.
He said during the operation, police seized a car, two motorcycles, three handphones of various brands, helmets, a cash box and RM71,019 cash.
The suspects were remanded beginning March 22 for seven days to facilitate investigation under Section 392 of the Penal Code for robbery.
Meanwhile, DCP Mohamed Usuf said throughout the months of January to February 2024, the state CID had launched a total of four operations known as 'Ops Cantas Mega ' in Penang.
He said these operations were meant to target former criminals and individuals wanted by police.
"A total of 253 raids have been conducted in Penang, Kedah and Perlis, and from the raids we have arrested 245 suspects," he said.
He said the suspects included 115 local men, 60 local women and 70 foreign nationals aged between 18 and 64.
He said among the offences committed by the suspects were human trafficking, robbery, drug abuse, illegal gambling and others.
