Significant increase in online scams in past few weeks, says Dr Wee

JOHOR BARU: MCA’s public complaints bureaus have noticed a significant increase in online scams, especially in the past few weeks, says party president Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong.

“The government and banks need to play a proactive role in preventing online scams. Our complaints bureaus noticed that there were many cases in which the culprits were able to make more than 10 transactions in one day.

"How could this have happened when we are fully aware that there is a limit on the number of transactions allowed to be made within a day?

"Whether it is due to carelessness or a weakness in the system, the government must take proactive measures to hold banks accountable for such cases," he said in a press conference after chairing the Johor MCA meeting here on Friday (March 22).

Dr Wee said Bank Negara should also intervene to prevent such cases from continuously affecting the public, especially as they are already bogged down with other issues.

"This is a question raised by the people. We want the government to go to the bottom of this issue and find a solution.

"Scam victims should not solely be held responsible for this. There is also a need for an intervention from Bank Negara," he said, adding that MCA would raise the matter with the relevant parties.

Dr Wee said this was among the issues that were discussed in the meeting here.

He added that issues such as the rising cost of living, providing training for its local councillors, and having a meeting with the state government were also discussed.

Separately, in a Facebook post, Dr Wee also said they also discussed national debt, financial incentives for sugar manufacturers, and the problems of several newly constructed and relocated Chinese primary schools that have yet to be implemented.

"Another issue that concerns small and medium-sized poultry farmers is the compulsory conversion of an open cage system to a closed coop system, which will cost an additional RM7mil to RM10mil, which 70% of the farmers cannot afford. This problem will eventually lead to a shortage of chicken and eggs.

"At the meeting, we also talked about appointing leaders to chair the state tourism bureau of MCA which will help promote the country’s tourism industry and the Malaysia My Second Home (MM2H) programme, which will increase the national income.

"At the same time, I also urged our comrades to work hard and be well prepared for the next state election to ensure a landslide victory for Barisan Nasional," he said in a Facebook post after the meeting.
