OCM accepts govt's decision to not host Commonwealth Games 2026

PETALING JAYA: The Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) has accepted the decision from the government to not host the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Malaysia.

OCM, which also helms the Commonwealth Games Association (CGA) of Malaysia, first announced the news that the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) offered the hosting rights to Kuala Lumpur and even urged the government to take up the hosting rights.

On Monday (March 18), the body’s secretary-general Datuk Nazifuddin Najib said Malaysia would sustainably hold the games, but his president Tan Sri Dr Norza Zakaria had since issued a statement, saying he respected the decision made by the Cabinet.

"OCM as the CGA of Malaysia wishes to express our gratitude to the Malaysian government, particularly the Youth and Sports Ministry for giving due consideration to the offer made by CGF," said Norza.

"After taking into account the financial implication and all aspects of the organisation of the Games, we wholeheartedly understand the government’s decision to prioritise the needs of the people."
