Yong urges GRS government to set up committee on return of Labuan to Sabah

KOTA KINABALU: Datuk Seri Yong Teck Lee proposes that the Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) government set up a committee to reclaim Labuan from the Federal Government.

The Sabah Progressive Party (SAPP) president contended that the return of Labuan to Sabah was inevitable.

He claimed this was because the Federal Government failed to keep its promises to Sabah and Labuan during the federalisation of Labuan in 1984.

“I have already proposed to the ruling GRS government to set up a ‘technical committee on the return of Labuan to Sabah’,” added Yong, who is also a GRS deputy chairman.

He said Labuan's return to Sabah would bring the island within Sabah's domestic immigration zone.

This means, he said, that travellers between Sabah and Labuan, by sea and air, will not have to deal with the hassle of immigration control.

He added that only travel to and from Sarawak, Peninsular Malaysia, and international destinations will be subject to immigration control.
